Even if you are a solopreneur, you don't have to travel this journey alone.
We believe that we are created for community.
Mentorship is a wonderful way to experience community with
someone who understands exactly where you are
and where you are going.
BUSINESS MENTOR
This is what most people automatically think of when you say "mentor," some business expert to tell you what to do, when and how. There are factors we find really important in a mentor that may depart from the norm. Let us share a few:
TRANSPARENCY: a mentor should be just as willing to expose themselves as they expect their colleague mentee to, modeling open and honest communication to set the stage for the relationship.
VULNERABILITY: a mentor should be able to share their shortcomings, struggles and failures as well as their accomplishments and successes. Lessons learned is a better teacher than a lecture.
AVAILABILITY: one of the top complaints we hear about mentors is that they can't often be found. A good mentor is realistic and up front about their availability and the type of relationship they are willing to foster. This helps properly manage expectations, giving the mentee an opportunity to enter into the relationship or not.
GOOD LISTENER: while new and or struggling business owners may be anxious for good advice, a good mentor spends more time listening than talking. By listening and asking good questions, a good mentor can help ensure that they hear to understand what is truly desired. It also gives the mentee an opportunity to fully think through their situation and be an integral part of uncovering solutions.
SPIRITUAL MENTOR
Most of the businesses we help say that their business and talent is God-given. But not many have a spiritual mentor that can speak into their life as it pertains to their faith AND their business.
We encourage everyone to have a spiritual mentor because of the valuable perspective, encouragement and accountability one can provide.
PEER MENTOR
You may think that you read that wrong, "Peer Mentor," you ask, "is that a thing?"
Why yes it is! A Peer Mentor is someone who is in a similar place on your journey as you are. This is someone who can share in your struggles, offering encouragement and receiving the same from you. You inspire one another not to give up, even as you tackle similar obstacles together and discover and share strategies and resources to overcome them. Often when one is down the other is up and you help one another to stay the course.
I strongly encourage all business owners to find a peer they can walk with on their journey.
Biz By Faith is happy to have Score St. Louis as one of its mentor partners.
For our Business and Wealth Growth Group participants, we host an annual Mentor Meet-up event to connect the business owners we serve to our community partners, business leaders, faith leaders, and those desiring to give back by mentoring a small business owner.
